——————PROLOGUE——————
Seattle, USA, May 14 2011

The bell rang, indicating that lunch break was ten minutes from ending. Teens and teachers of all ages filled the well-lit halls, striving to get to their next classes on time.
Garbage and food debris littered the ground from the people that ate by their lockers, too lazy to get up and walk a few meters to the garbage can that wasn't even half full. There was dirt and grass everywhere on the doormat from the students who were playing outside on the muddy field in the rain. Soon, the janitors would come out and start drying the floor before someone slips and gets seriously injured.
Lightning flashed outside, followed by the thunderclap a few seconds later. The rain continued pouring down as it had been for two days straight. Some people enjoyed the rain, some didn't. And other just didn't care because they were used to it.
But as the dull weather went on, no one seemed to notice dark object fall through the clouds at an alarmingly fast speed, heading straight for the large high school. The object crashed through the schools' ceiling as if it were nothing but paper and landed in the centre of the gym, crashing through the wooden floor and making a big crater. Dust and smoke from the newly started fire filled the air, making it hard to see anything for the one student who lived out of the hundred that were there only moments before.
The girl tried to stand up but she cried in pain as she noticed she couldn't move. Her legs were crushed under a chunk of the destroyed ceiling. She then began to call out for help, but no replies came. But still she kept on yelling, all the while trying to somehow get her legs out from under the concrete debris. That's when the footsteps started.
"Hello?" the girl called in a weak voice. She coughed harder, the dust and smoke starting to affect her breathing. "Is somebody there?"
No replied came but the sounds continued. They were sounds of short but heavy footsteps and small mechanical clink sounds, as if someone was assembling something. But then came familiar sounds of frightened and curious voices and yells from people who must have been away from the gym area of the school. She could make out people – probably the teachers – yelling at others to stay back.
"Hey! Someone please get me out of here! I'm stuck!" She coughed some more and began to feel light headed. She would not last much longer in the position she was in. She would soon pass out, suffocate, and die.
"There's still someone in there!" yelled someone from outside the gym, loud enough for everyone to hear.
Sirens were now audible enough to hear and the girl grew a sense of renewed hope. Maybe I might live, the girl thought to herself. But that thought was short lived. The girl's body froze with fear when she heard the low growl-like sound, follow by more strange clicking sounds. She lost all her will to yell.  At this time, three men found their way to the girl through the thick smoke by listening to her yell 'get me out of here!' over and over again. Together, the men tried to calm the girl down and free her but were stopped as the same low growl emitted from the unknown source again.
The air had now cleared just enough for the four of them to see the faint outline of a tall and hunched figure working away at something in front of it, but they couldn't tell who or what it was. But that was all anyone got to see before a blinding white flash killed their vision.
Then they were gone.
The school was nothing but bits and pieces of rubble in a matter of seconds. Concrete and other debris crashed into the surrounding neighbourhood, crushing houses and cars and tearing trees off their roots. The whole area looked like a hellhole. It was nothing but a complete wasteland.
Not a single soul survived.
This is the working prologue for the book trilogy I'm working on, Helljumper. The first book will be called Lunar Void.

Constructive criticism will be greatly appreciated :)
